After the Opium War, it became a concession of Britain and France starting from the eleventh year of the Xianfeng reign (1861). Shamian was once an important commercial port in Guangzhou. Over the years, more than ten countries established consulates on the island, and nine foreign banks and more than forty foreign firms operated on Shamian. The Guangdong Customs Club, Guangzhou Club, and other institutions were established one after another. Shamian witnessed the changes in Guangzhou’s modern history . The European-style buildings on the island have formed a unique outdoor “museum” of architecture that represents the modern history and concession era of China.
