The city, with a history of over 2,200 years, has always welcomed guests from around the world. This ancient commercial city, which has been thriving for ports, is also renowned as “Flower City” for being surrounded by flowers throughout the year.

Guangzhou is also an important tourist destination for overseas tourists. In 2017, Guangzhou hosted 3.4574 million foreign tourists with overnight stays, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.87%. Meanwhile, Guangzhou is also China’s largest source of outbound tourist. In 2017, 1.7946 million citizens traveled abroad through Guangzhou travel agencies, not including self-guided travelers.

There is a huge potential and a bright prospect for cooperation between Guangzhou and Mexico City in tourism. On April 11, 2017, China Southern Airlines launched a direct flight from Mexico City to Guangzhou to facilitate Mexican tourists to reach Guangzhou. Therefore, Deputy Mayor Wang Dong expects that Guangzhou (Mexico City) Tourism Promotion Center can fully avail itself of the various resources in the region and continuously strengthen the friendly cooperation with tourism industry and the media, and become an important bridge for tourism exchanges and cooperation between the two cities.”

Guests at the ceremony were shown all aspects of Guangzhou’s image, and its rich tourism resources and high-tech tourism facilities through a video.

Director Liu Yumei of Tourism Administration of Guangzhou made the further introduction to Guangzhou: “Guangzhou, located in southern China, adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao, is China’s southern gateway to the world. With a history of over 2,200 years, it is also the starting point of China’s Maritime Silk Road. Guangzhou Port has been opened for over 2000 years. Guangzhou and Mexico City share many similarities, and both cities have thousands of years of history and culture. In recent years, Guangzhou has continuously strengthened its tourism promotion efforts in other countries and established 20 overseas promotion cooperation jointly with China Southern Airlines. Guangzhou (Mexico City) Tourism Promotion Center is one of the important promotion centers. Mexico City and Guangzhou are both popular international tourist destinations. In 2017, Guangzhou received 11,500 tourists from Mexico and fewer than 10,000 Guangzhou visitors went to Mexico. This presents us a huge potential for tourism cooperation between the two sides, and the establishment of Guangzhou (Mexico City) Tourism Promotion Center will strengthen contacts and tourism cooperation between the two cities.”

Representatives from the tourism administration of Mexico City and General Manager Wu Yingjun also delivered speeches at the ceremony. Under the witness of Director Liu Yumei and representatives of the tourism administration of Mexico City, Deputy Mayor Wang Dong and General Manager Wu Yingjun unveiled the nameplate of the promotion center. The center is the first, among 20 overseas promotion centers, to be established in Latin America.
